7 Etsy SEO mistakes that quietly cost you traffic
None of these look like mistakes while you're making them. That's what makes them expensive — the listing looks finished, so nothing prompts you to go back.
- 01
Leaving tag slots empty
Etsy gives you 13. An empty slot isn't neutral — it's a search you've chosen not to appear in. Sellers often stop at eight or nine because they run out of obvious ideas, which is exactly when the less obvious angles (occasion, recipient, room, style) are worth the most.
- 02
Tagging what your title already says
Etsy indexes every word in your title. A tag repeating that phrase word-for-word adds no new reach — it just burns one of your thirteen. Tags should cover ground the title couldn't fit.
- 03
Using single words instead of phrases
"Mug" competes with every mug on the platform. "Coffee lover gift" competes with a fraction of that, and matches how people actually search. If a tag leaves five or more of its twenty characters unused, it's probably too broad.
- 04
Chasing search volume over buying intent
A high-volume term you rank 400th for sends you nothing. A specific phrase you rank 5th for sends you buyers who already know what they want. Specific and reachable beats broad and invisible, especially for a young shop.
- 05
Treating third-party sales estimates as fact
Etsy's API terms don't permit any third-party tool to expose private shop metrics, so every competitor "monthly sales" number you see is extrapolated from public signals. Useful as direction, misleading as fact — and worth knowing before you rebuild a listing around one.
- 06
Writing the description for the algorithm
The description's job is converting the person who already clicked. Stuffing it with keywords costs you the sale you'd already earned. Answer the real questions: size, materials, care, shipping, and whether it suits what they're imagining.
- 07
Publishing AI copy without checking it
AI drafts can surface trademarked terms a human writer would instinctively avoid — a brand name, a licensed character — and that's an IP complaint rather than a ranking problem. Etsy also asks sellers to disclose AI involvement in a listing.
The pattern underneath them
Six of these seven come down to the same thing: treating the title, the tags, and the description as three separate chores rather than one budget of search coverage. Planned together, they stop competing with each other for the same handful of terms. Our free tag generator does that split for you — paste a description and it fills all 13 slots across distinct angles, skipping anything your title already covers.
Stitchlist is a Chrome extension in the making that drafts the whole listing from your product photos — title, description, and all 13 tags planned together, screened for trademark terms, with Etsy's AI disclosure handled. Join the waitlist to hear when the beta opens.
