Etsy title character limit: what fits and what gets cut in search
Etsy will let you type up to 140 characters into a title. It will not, in almost any place a shopper actually sees your listing, show all 140 of them. The limit that matters isn't the one Etsy enforces — it's the one the search grid, the phone screen, and Google impose on top of it.

The 140-character limit is real, but it's not the one to write for
140 characters is the hard cap the listing editor enforces — go past it and Etsy simply won't let you save. It's generous enough that most sellers never hit it, which is part of the problem: with that much room, it's tempting to write a title that reads like a run-on sentence of every keyword you can think of. Almost none of that room is visible where it counts.
What actually shows in the search grid
In Etsy's search results, listing titles are truncated to fit a fixed-width card — typically two lines before an ellipsis cuts the rest. That's roughly the first 60–80 characters, depending on how wide the letters in your specific title are. Everything after that point is invisible to a shopper scanning results. It still gets indexed by Etsy's search — but it does zero work for the click, because nobody reads it before deciding whether to tap in.
Mobile cuts it shorter than desktop
Most Etsy traffic is on a phone, where the search grid is narrower and titles wrap even sooner — often closer to 40–50 visible characters before truncation. If your best, most specific phrase sits at character 70, the majority of your shoppers never see it. This is the practical reason front-loading a title matters more than filling it out: the words that decide whether someone clicks have to survive the narrowest screen your title will ever be shown on.
Google truncates even shorter
A meaningful share of Etsy traffic arrives from Google, not Etsy search — and Google's result snippets typically display around 50–60 characters of a page title before cutting it with an ellipsis. Etsy listing titles often double as the page title Google shows, so the same front-loaded structure that wins the on-site grid is also what survives a Google search results page.
A practical way to write for the cut
Write your title, then read only the first 60 characters on their own — that's a fair approximation of what most shoppers will actually see. If those 60 characters alone don't clearly say what the product is and why it's worth clicking, no amount of additional keyword phrases past that point will fix it. Put your strongest, most specific, most-searched phrase first; treat everything after character 60 as bonus search coverage, not the main pitch.
Use the extra room — just don't depend on it
None of this means the characters past 60 are wasted. Etsy's search still indexes the full 140, so a secondary phrase or gift angle placed later can still surface a listing for a search it wouldn't otherwise match. The point is ordering, not deletion: put anything that has to be seen before character 60, and let anything that only has to be searchable live after it.
Common questions
- What is the Etsy title character limit?
- 140 characters. It's a hard cap — the listing editor won't let you save past it. But almost nowhere a shopper sees your listing shows all 140; the search grid, mobile, and Google all truncate much sooner.
- How much of an Etsy title actually shows in search?
- Roughly the first 60–80 characters in Etsy's desktop search grid before the ellipsis, and often only 40–50 on mobile, where most Etsy traffic is. Google snippets show around 50–60. Front-load the phrase that matters most.
- Do keywords after the visible cutoff still count?
- Yes — Etsy's search indexes the full 140 characters, so phrases past the cut can still surface your listing in searches. They just do no work for the click, because shoppers never read them before deciding whether to tap in.
Stitchlist drafts titles that front-load the phrase that matters most, so the part that gets cut off is never the part doing the work. Try it on one of your own products — no account needed.
