How to write Etsy descriptions that convert
By the time someone reads your description, your title and photos already did their job — they clicked. The description's only job now is closing the sale, and that's a completely different task than ranking in search. Stuffing it with keywords at this point doesn't help you rank any higher; it just costs you the sale you'd already earned.

What a converting description actually answers
A shopper who clicked into your listing has a short, specific list of unanswered questions, and a description that skips them loses the sale to hesitation rather than to a competitor:
- What is it, specifically? Not the category — the material, the size, the technique. "Ceramic mug" is a category. "Wheel-thrown stoneware, 12oz" is an answer.
- Will it work for what I have in mind? Dimensions, capacity, fit — whatever makes the product either right or wrong for their specific use.
- How do I take care of it? Wash instructions, durability, what happens with normal wear.
- When will it actually arrive? Processing time separate from shipping time, especially for made-to-order items — this is the single most common reason for a pre-purchase message.
Everything else — the brand story, the studio background, the adjectives — is worth including if there's room, but it's not what closes a hesitant buyer. These four are.
Three before/after rewrites
Same products, same length budget. The "before" versions are the kind of generic, keyword-first copy that's easy to write fast and easy to skim past. The "after" versions spend the same words answering an actual question.
A ceramic mug
Before
Beautiful handmade ceramic mug. Perfect gift. Great quality. Makes a wonderful present for any occasion. Coffee mug, tea mug, ceramic mug, handmade mug, gift mug.
After
Wheel-thrown from speckled stoneware and finished with a matte glaze that won't fade in the dishwasher. Holds 12oz — enough for a full pour without crowding the rim. Each one is shaped by hand, so the glaze pools slightly differently on every mug; expect small variation, not a flaw. Microwave and dishwasher safe. Ships in 2-3 days, wrapped for a gift if you'd like — just leave a note at checkout.
A knit baby blanket
Before
Soft cozy baby blanket, great for newborns. Makes a perfect baby shower gift. Available in many colors. Handmade with love.
After
Knit from 100% merino wool — soft enough for newborn skin, breathable enough to prevent overheating, and machine washable on delicate (no felting). Finished size is 30" x 36", big enough to last through the toddler years as a lovey or car-seat blanket. Choose from 8 colors at checkout. Each blanket takes about a week to knit, so please allow 7-10 business days before it ships — worth building into your baby shower timeline if you're cutting it close.
A leather wallet
Before
High quality genuine leather wallet. Durable and stylish. Great gift for men. Fits cards and cash. Buy now!
After
Full-grain leather, hand-stitched, and cut to hold 6-8 cards plus folded bills without bulking up your pocket — the usual complaint with bifolds bought off the shelf. The leather is unfinished on purpose: it'll darken and pick up a patina with use, so no two wallets look the same after a year. Free initials on the inside flap, added by hand — just tell us what you'd like at checkout.
Why the "before" versions don't rank better anyway
Etsy's search weighs the title and tags far more heavily than the description for matching a query — the description barely moves the needle on whether you show up at all. So the keyword-stuffed version isn't even winning the trade it's making: it loses the sale, and it doesn't meaningfully gain search visibility in return.
Stitchlist drafts a description from your product photos that answers what it is, who it's for, and how to care for it — in your voice, ready to review instead of write from scratch. Try it on one of your own products — no account needed.
